<p>This product is used to treat pronominal constipation. Some medications and ailments can make constipation more likely. Feaces softeners such as docusate are often the first method used for preventing   and curing this type of constipation. Docusate is often used when straining to have a bowel movement should be avoided (e.g., after a heart attack or surgery).</p>
<p>Docusate is a stool softener. It works by increasing the amount of water the stool absorbs in the gut, making the feaces softer and easier to pass.</p>
<h3>How do I use Docusate Sodium?</h3>
<p>Follow all directions on the product package unless otherwise directed by your doctor. If you are uncertain about any of the information, consult your doctor or pharmacist.</p>
<p>Take this medication by mouth, generally at night with a full glass (8 ounces or 240 milliliters) of water or juice, or as instructed by your doctor. The dosage is based on your medical situation and response to therapy. Reduce your dose or stop taking this medication if you develop diarrhea.</p>
<p>If you are using the liquid form of this medication, measure the dose carefully using a special measuring spoon. Do not use a household spoon as you may not get the accurate dose. If you are using the drops, measure the medication with the dropper provided, or use a dose-measuring spoon to make sure you have the correct dose. Mix the syrup, liquid or drops in 4 to 8 ounces of fruit juice, milk or infant formula to prevent throat irritation and mask a bitter taste.</p>
<p>Use this medication only when needed. Do not use this medication for more than 1 week unless instructed by your doctor.</p>
<p>Relief is generally seen in 1 to 3 days.</p>
<p>Inform your doctor if your condition worsens.</p>
<h3>What are the side effects of this drug?</h3>
<p>Many products can cause side effects. A side effect is an unwanted response to a medication when it is taken in ordinary doses. Side effects can be calm or intense, temporary or long term. If you are concerned about side effects, talk about the risks and benefits of this product with your doctor.</p>
<p>The following side effects have been reported by at least 1% of people taking this product. Many of these side effects can be controlled, and some may go away on their own over time.</p>
<p>These side effects and they are intense or bothersome.   Your pharmacist may be able to advise you on managing side effects. These include:</p>
<ul>
<li>Skin rash</li>
<li>Stomach or intestinal cramping</li>
<li>Throat irritation (if using liquid forms)</li>
</ul>
<p>Some people may experience side effects other than those listed. Check with your doctor if you notice any symptom that worries you while you are taking this medication.</p>
